In this Football Manager 2019 Southampton team guide, we will explore the club in close detail to provide you with information to help you at the start your FM19 Southampton save.

Southampton finished 17th last season with only 36 points and only just avoided relegation.

They have always been a club which has been able to bring young players through their youth system and it is still part of the boards’ philosophy.

Managing Southampton is a very good challenge as the club have some good players in their first team and plenty of young prospects to develop, they also have a very good transfer budget which will allow you to make your mark as the

EXPECTATIONS

Southampton Expectations FM19

Although Southampton almost got relegated last season, the board are expecting a mid-table finish this time around.

This should be an achievable target when you consider the quality within the team already and the transfer budget available for new signings.

The board are also expecting you to reach the latter stages of the cup competitions, which again should be achievable with the squad available to you.

TRANSFER & WAGE BUDGET

Transfer Budget: £45.6M
Wage Budget: £1.63M (£217K remaining)

Southampton has one of the larger transfer budgets available out of the Premier League teams, with £45.6M transfer budget and £217K remaining wage budget available, you will have the chance to sign in some important players into your team.

Their transfer budget is even more remarkable when you consider they have already spent £48.5M on players this season, with the signings of Jannick Vestergaard (£22.5M), Angus Gunn (£10M) and Mohamed Elyounoussi (£16M).

KEY PLAYERS

Nathan Redmond – (CA 141 – PA 150)

Nathan Redmond FM19

Nathan Redmond is one of the best players for Southampton, following his £8M move from Norwich in 2016/17, he has played every league match.

Redmond is a fast agile player who likes to be on the ball attacking, he can play in the majority of attacking positions but is naturally an AML or AMC.

Redmond is still only 24 years old and should be one of your key players for the next few seasons.

Best Attributes – Acceleration (17), Pace (17), Agility (15), Dribbling (16), Balance (15).

Oriol Romeu – (CA 137 – PA 145)

Oriol Romeu FM19

Oriol Romeu is a hard-working defensive midfielder who has been the main enforcer at Southampton since his £5M transfer from Chelsea in 2015/16.

Romeu has excellent Teamwork and Work Rate attributes which make his a really valuable player in the squad, alongside his very good positioning, anticipation and decisions attributes, Romeu is an extremely effective defensive midfielder.

Alongside the majority of the other Southampton players, Romeu is still fairly young at only 26 years old and could be a key player for Southampton for a good few seasons.

Best Attributes – Teamwork (18), Positioning (16), Anticipation (16), Work Rate (16), Strength (16).

Danny Ings – (CA 140 – PA 152)

Danny Ings FM19

Danny Ings is currently on loan to Southampton, however, he will join the team permanently on 01/07/19 for £18M.

Ings has had a difficult few seasons at Liverpool, with injuries and strong competition causing him to only play in a handful of matches.

He is however still a very good striker and is the best striker currently at Southampton, so he should be able to get a lot more game time.

Ings is a Pressing Forward who is good at putting pressure the opposition defenders when they have the ball, causing them to make mistakes.

Best Attributes – Determination (18), Work Rate (16), Finishing (15), First Touch (15), Teamwork (15).

YOUNG PLAYERS

Southampton has one of the most successful youth systems in the premier league, with a countless number of young players becoming regular premier league footballers.

Here are a couple of the best young players at Southampton which you should look to develop into first-team players.

Yan Valery – (CA 115 – PA 160*)

Yan Valery FM19

Yan Valery is a 19-year-old right-back who has come through the Southampton youth team following his transfer from Stade Rennais in 2015.

Valery is not too far away from first-team football as his current ability is getting close to the level of first-team regular Cedric and should be played in as many games as possible to speed up his development.

Valery is a very athletic player with good Acceleration and Pace, and with good passing, crossing and defending attributes, he could become an extremely good all-round right-back.

Best Attributes – Acceleration (16), Pace (15), Natural Fitness (14), Stamina (14), Agility (13).

Kayne Ramsay – (CA 105 – PA 160*)

Kayne Ramsay FM19

Kayne Ramsay is currently in the Southampton Under 18s team, however, he could be promoted into the senior squad within a season or two depending on his development.

Ramsay can naturally play at right-back or centre-back, however, due to his massive 6’5″ height, he would probably be more suited to a centre-back role.

Best Attributes – Acceleration (14), Pace (14), Determination (13), Jumping Reach (13), Stamina (13).

Michael Obafemi – (CA 107 – PA 160*)

Michael Obafemi FM19

Michael Obafemi is another player in the Southampton youth teams to keep an eye on, he currently players for the Southampton Under 23s, but again could be a player worth promoting within the next season or two.

Obafemi is a Pressing Forward Striker who already fits the mould of the other Strikers in the senior team.

He is lightning quick is 17 Acceleration and Pace, and is already a very good finisher.

Best Attributes – Acceleration (17), Pace (17), Stamina (14), Strength (14), Work Rate (14).

PLAYERS TO CONSIDER SELLING

Steven Davis – (CA 128 – PA 142)

Sean Davis FM19

Steven Davis is already surplus to requirements as he is spending the season on loan at Rangers.

Although he has been a regular player for Southampton over the past few seasons, he is now 33-years-old and his attributes are declining.

Davis is out of contract at the end of the season and is not a player whose contract you should renew.

although you won’t make any money from a transfer, you will save on his £60K p/w wages.

Value: £5M
Wage: £60K p/w
Expected transfer value: Released on Free

Shane Long – (CA 129 – PA 140)

Shane Long FM19

Shane Long has never been the most prolific striker for Southampton and with the new signing of Danny Ings and with Charlie Austin available as backup, Long will be unlikely to get any game time for the senior team.

Long is also 31 years old and his attributes will begin to decline over the next seasons, so now would be the best time to sell him and make the most money available.

Value: £10.25M
Wage: £60K p/w
Expected transfer value: £8M+

Fraser Forster – (CA 130 – PA 150)

Fraser Forster FM19

Fraser Forster is currently playing in the Southampton Under 23s team, he is the third-choice goalkeeper behind Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn.

Forster is still only 30 years old, so would be a good signing for many different clubs, however, his £70K p/w wages might be a sticking point for any potential transfers.

Value: £9.25M
Wage: £70K p/w
Expected transfer value: £5M+

PLAYERS TO CONSIDER SIGNING

Southamptons philosophy is to recruit talented young players which can be developed at the club and potentially become world-class players, so this should be your main target when signing a new player.

As there are no gaping holes in the first-team, you can either look to sign in cheap wonderkids who will play backup for a couple of seasons, before becoming regulars, or you can spend a little more on already established wonderkids who can develop while playing first-team football.

Here are a few players who would be good signings for Southampton;

Nikola Milenkovic – (CA 143 – PA 180)

Nikola Milenkovic FM19

Nikola Milenkovic a young wonderkid who currently plays for Italian side Fiorentina.

Milenkovic is capable of playing as a right-back or centre-back, but given that he is 6’5″ tall and Southampton already has Valery at right-back, he would be best suited in the centre-back position.

He would be available for only £15M but would demand a wage of around £85K p/w, making him the best-paid player at the club.

Best Attributes – Jumping Reach (17), Bravery (16), Marking (15), Tackling (15), Strength (15).

Value: £14.25M
Wage: £19.25K p/w
Expected Transfer Cost: £15M
Expected Wage: £85K p/w

Filippo Melegoni – (CA 120 – PA 160*)

Filippo Melegoni FM19

Filippo Melegoni is an Italian Wonderkid who currently plays for Pescara in Italian Serie B on loan from Atalanta.

Melegoni is a Central Midfielder who likes to play as a Deep Lying Playmaker or Regista.

He has a potential ability of 160, which would make him a very good defensive midfielder in any premier league team.

Best Attributes – Fih (15), Passing (15), Technique (15), Stamina (15), Natural Fitness (15).

Value: £725K
Wage: £950 p/w
Expected Transfer Cost: £10M+
Expected Wage: £10K p/w

Dejan Joveljic – (CA 111 – PA 170*)

Dejan Joeveljic FM19

Dejan Joveljic is another young wonderkid who would be a good signing for Southampton who currently plays for FC Red Star Belgrade.

He plays as a pressing forward striker so is similar to Shane Long and Danny Ings who are already in the team.

However, with a potential ability of 170, he has the potential to be a lot better than Long and Ings.

He is available for as little as £1.2M, which is an absolute steal for a player of his significant potential.

However, Work Permit issues mean he won’t be available for selection immediately and would need to be loaned out until he’s eligible for a Work Permit.

Best Attributes – Natural Fitness (15), Pace (13), Flair (13), Off The Ball (13), Determination (13).

Value: £300K
Wage: £550 p/w
Expected Transfer Cost: £1.5M
Expected Wage: £4.8K p/w
